West African Vodun

17% of the population of Benin practices an ancient polytheistic religion known as Vodon. Pronounced Voodoo it is the West African precursor to New World Voodoo. The central tenant is that everything in creation is divine as has a spirit. The divine creator has 2 aspects, male (Mawu) and female (Lisa). Although there are similarities between African and New World Voodoo the main difference is New World Voodoo contains elements of Christianity and local (mainly Creole and French) cultural traditions blended into it.

  1. Is it really polytheistic? Voduns in themselves are not Gods they are spirits.

  2. It is not polytheistic. The white man never understood the complexity of God. There are many different aspects of God and are manifested through all (including spirits). It's like a ray of light that shines through a prism and splinters into many different rays and colors. One God, many hands.
